Sheremet'evo (SVO) airport is located approximately 30 km to the northwest from Moscow downtown. Currently SVO consists of two parallel runways (25R,L and 7R,L), two passenger terminals ("Sheremet'yevo-1" for domestic flights and "Sheremet'evo-2" for international flights) and a number of small cargo terminals.
Intensity of flight is not very high if compared to the major airports in the West. Approximately one can await 8-10 arriving flights per hour and the same number of departures. SVO homes headquaters of Aeroflot which is the largest Russian operator
for passenger and cargo flights, and some other smaller companies. The variety of planes you can see at SVO really makes impression. First of all, almost all types of Russian airliners that are currently in service do flights to and from SVO. My personal expirience of plane spotting in this airport in the spring and summer of the year 2000 resulted in a number of photos of:
An-12, An-24, An-26, An-74, An-124, IL-62M, IL-76, IL-86, IL-96, Tu-134, Tu-154, Tu-204, Yak-40, Yak-42 of various versions. As for the Western-built planes, you can see in SVO next ones: Airbus A-310, A-320, A-330; Boeing B-737, B-747, B-757, B-767, B-777; Fokker F-50, F-70; Embraer ERJ-145; McDonnell-Douglas DC-10, MD-8X, Saab 340 and 2000; and various business jets. |

1.
If you choose to drive a car from Moscow to SVO, you should take M-10 motorway and follow it until the turn to the "International highway" which will lead you directly to Sheremet'evo-2 passenger terminal and perimeter road. Sheremet'evo-1 terminal is on the opposite side to Sheremet'evo-2, so to get there quickly you need just to drive along the perimeter road to the east of Sheremet'evo-2. Still, M-10 motorway is well-known for huge traffic jams (actually, M-10 is the main connection road between Moscow and St.Petersburg) so often it makes more sense to use municipal transport to get to SVO. 2. The second option is to take a bus. Route 851 goes to SVO and back from "Rechnoy Vokzal" metro station, and the same does route 817 from metro station "Planernaya". Of course, buses get into jams along with other traffic, but they have a priority on the road so move a bit faster that the others. Normally it takes 40-45 minutes from any of two listed stations to SVO. 3. There is a number of fixed-route taxis that go to the airport from metro along with buses. However, they have a flexible schedule so you can never know how long it'll take to wait until such taxi arrives. 4. The last variant is to take a usual taxi, which is probably the fastest way, but can turn out to be a bit costly (about $20-30). *Some time ago (before the collapse of USSR) a possibility of regular helicopter connection between Moscow and SVO was studied but project was never launched because of the predicted high expences.
